Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery, located in North Lincolnshire, is a key asset of the Prax Group, a British multinational energy conglomerate dealing in crude oil, petroleum products and biofuels and is the only British refiner remaining in the UK energy market.

 

The refinery processes up to 5.4 million tonnes of crude oil per year (up to 113,000 barrels a day) and incorporates some of the most advanced refining and conversion processes in Europe, supplying products by road, rail, sea and pipeline.

The Candidate

 

We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer who is responsible for leading discipline-specific maintenance activities to ensure equipment reliability, safety compliance, and cost-effective operations across the assigned Business Unit. 

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Safety Leadership – Actively promote safety initiatives by ensuring full compliance with refinery safety procedures. Participate and assist in accident/incident investigations, conduct workplace safety audits, and coordinate agreed corrective and preventative actions. 
  • Maintenance Planning – Lead the development of availability- and cost-focused maintenance plans for equipment within the Business Unit, ensuring effective implementation and performance monitoring. 
  • Budget Compliance – Ensure all maintenance activities are delivered within established budgetary constraints. 
  • Standards and Specifications – Define internal maintenance standards and technical specifications, including company rules related to lead times, cost controls, and procurement processes. 
  • Audit & Compliance Oversight – Perform audits on internal standards and maintenance procedures to ensure operational consistency and regulatory compliance. 
  • Maintenance Handover – Participate in and ensure comprehensive handover of maintenance activities, including root cause analysis, quality assurance, and critical technical decision-making. 
  • Asset Reliability Monitoring – Analyse and communicate key performance indicators (KPIs) to track asset reliability across the Business Unit and identify improvement areas. 
  • Reliability Programme Execution – Ensure a structured approach to reliability is maintained through routine reliability meetings and use of formal tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA). 
  • Project Management – Manage reliability study projects aimed at improving performance, reliability, and lifecycle management of critical assets. 
  • Data Analysis and Optimisation – Use data insights to optimise the balance between reliability and maintenance costs, enhancing overall equipment effectiveness. 
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration – Facilitate effective communication and shared problem-solving between different engineering disciplines within the Area Improvement Team and broader refinery teams. 
  • Technical Support – Provide engineering guidance and oversight to Area Field Team members to ensure maintenance work is performed to expected technical standards. 
  • Shutdown and Turnaround Participation – Contribute to Turnaround and Inspection (T&I) work scope preparation and execution, supporting long-term asset reliability and lifecycle integrity. 
  • CMMS Management – Oversee collection and reporting of maintenance data using the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), enabling effective cost and equipment tracking across the Business Unit. 
  • Management of Change (MoC) – Propose, develop, and implement Management of Change (MoC) projects in alignment with refinery engineering and reliability objectives. 
  • Cost Control – Support continuous monitoring of maintenance expenditure to ensure alignment with operational budgets. 
  • Knowledge Transfer – Ensure maintenance handovers include clear documentation, diagnostic insights, and improvement opportunities. 
  • Trend Identification – Monitor equipment failures and incidents to identify trends with potential broader impact and implement corrective measures. 
  • Continuous Improvement – Drive improvements in safety, cost-efficiency, reliability, and energy use through analysis and application of key KPIs. 
  • Strategic Planning – Contribute to medium- and long-term planning to meet HSE, Reliability, Energy, and Financial performance goals. 

 

Qualifications/Experience Required:

 

  • Chartered Engineer status or demonstrable equivalent technical competence through experience 
  • Minimum HNC / HND in a relevant engineering discipline 
  • Proficient in IT systems relevant to maintenance and asset management 
  • Effective communication and coordination skills 
  • Sound understanding of key refinery operational processes 
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a mechanical engineering role within a refinery or related process industry 
  • In-depth experience with refinery mechanical, electrical, and analytical equipment 
  • Proven track record in maintenance strategy execution and reliability engineering 
  • Experience working in continuous production environments with high safety and reliability standards.
